Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
