Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
